November 23, 2009. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear today announced he will be the new chairman of the Southern Growth Policies Board. Gov. Beshear becomes Southern Growth’s 40th Chair, succeeding Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi and follows a long line of distinguished Southern leaders, including Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. As chairman, Gov. Beshear will host the 2010 Chairman’s Conference in Lexington, Kentucky June 6th through 8th. The focus will be on highlighting and strengthening the automotive industry in the South. Read more here. A Conversation on Southern Energy describes the current and future role of energy in Southern economic development. The report is full of regional and individual state data about existing and alternative energy sources. The report also includes recommendations necessary to participate in the future energy economy: continue to make energy conservation and efficiency top priorities; provide accurate information about energy production and its role in the economy; and support multiple energy sources for short and medium-term energy needs. Southern Growth, in conjunction with its partner, Southeast Agriculture and Forestry Energy Resources Alliance, will continue to work on implementation of the recommendations, especially the public education component. Technology, environmentalism, urbanization and globalization trends are nothing new, said Ted Abernathy, executive director of the Southern Growth Policies Board, to an audience of business students October 20. Communications technology has evolved over centuries, he suggested. Early examples of globalization include the evolution of the Silk Road and the creation of the East India Trading Company. Environmentalism has been a movement in the United States for more than a hundred years.
